Frequently Asked Questions

What is therapy, and how can it help me?

Therapy is a professional relationship focused on helping you understand and navigate your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. It can help with a range of issues, from anxiety, depression, and trauma, to relationship challenges and personal growth. Therapy offers a safe, confidential space to explore these issues with a trained therapist who can guide you towards healthier patterns and solutions. Whether you are dealing with specific problems or seeking general self-improvement, therapy can be a powerful tool for change.

How is therapy different from talking to a friend?

While talking to a friend can be helpful, therapy offers a different kind of support. A therapist is a trained professional who has the skills to help you explore complex emotions, identify patterns, and develop strategies for change. Therapy provides a confidential and unbiased environment where the focus is entirely on your needs. Unlike friends, who may offer advice based on their experiences, a therapist uses evidence-based techniques and professional knowledge to guide you. The therapeutic relationship is structured to foster growth, self-awareness, and healing in ways that casual conversations with friends may not.

How do I know if I need therapy?

You might benefit from therapy if you're experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues that are difficult to manage on your own. Therapy is not just for those with severe mental health concerns; it's also for anyone who wants to improve their emotional well-being, gain a deeper understanding of themselves, or develop better coping strategies. If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about your path, therapy can provide the support and guidance needed to move forward.

What can I expect during a therapy session?

In our online therapy sessions, you can expect a confidential and supportive environment where your therapist will help you explore your concerns and collaborate with you to set meaningful goals that align with the life you want to lead. The first session typically involves getting to know you and gathering important background information, which helps your therapist understand your needs and identify potential next steps. In subsequent sessions, you'll focus on addressing the issues you've highlighted, using evidence-based techniques tailored to help you make meaningful progress toward your goals.

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and the nature of the issues you're working on. Some people find resolution in a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy. During your initial sessions, you and your therapist will discuss your goals and establish a timeline that feels right for you. Therapy is a personalized process, and the duration is often adjusted as you progress.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential. In Ontario, all communications between a client and a therapist are protected by law. Your therapist cannot share any information about your sessions without your explicit consent, except in rare situations where there is a legal obligation, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by a court order. Our practice follows the CRPO's guidelines for maintaining confidentiality and protecting your privacy.

How do I choose the right therapist?

Finding the right therapist is a crucial part of your therapeutic journey. It's important to consider whether the therapist's experience and training align with your specific needs and goals. Equally important is how comfortable you feel with the therapist, as a strong therapeutic relationship is key to successful outcomes. To help you find the right fit, we offer free 20-minute consultations, allowing you to explore whether one of our therapists is the right match for you.

How do I pay for therapy?

Most private health insurance providers cover the cost of therapy under "psychological services." We encourage you to contact your insurance provider before your first session to confirm that your plan covers services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) or Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). If your insurance only covers services by a psychologist, please let us know-we have a psychologist supervisor, and we can arrange for your therapy to be covered under her supervision.

Please note that we do not offer direct billing services. You will need to handle payment directly with your insurance provider. We accept credit card (excluding American Express) or e-transfer payment for all sessions.

What if I can't make it to a session?

We ask that you provide at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session. This policy allows us to offer that time to another client who may be in need. We understand that unexpected circumstances arise, and we're willing to consider these on a case-by-case basis. However, cancellations without sufficient notice will be charged the full session fee to compensate for the time reserved for you.

Do you offer online therapy, and how does it work?

Yes, we offer online therapy, which allows you to receive support from the comfort of your own home. Our therapists are located in Toronto and Belleville/Trenton but are available to clients virtually across Ontario. Online therapy is conducted via secure video conferencing platforms, ensuring your sessions are private and confidential. It's a convenient option that provides the same level of care as in-person therapy.

What should I do if I run into my therapist in public?

If you see your therapist outside of sessions, it's up to you whether or not to acknowledge them. Your therapist will not initiate contact to protect your privacy and ensure your comfort. If you do decide to say hello, the interaction will be kept brief and respectful of your boundaries. The therapeutic relationship is different from social relationships, and maintaining professional boundaries is important for your therapy process.
